3 Poems by J.J. Campbell |

back into the sun

the phone call
caught me off guard
out of the blue
just to see how i
was doing

wouldn't you know it

always when i'm just
getting comfortable
here in my cave those
fuckers force me back
into the sun

enjoy it they will say
and my stubborn ass
will pout and hope
for a sunburn just for
some sick sense of
getting even

knowing damn well
that those fuckers tan

---

yet fruitless

it's a sudden jolt
that wakes you at
3 in the morning

nothing tangible

just a feeling of a
broken soul finally
gasping for air

where your past
seems frozen

entire scenes
flashing by in
mere seconds

where immortality
seems a noble
pursuit yet
fruitless

you'll fall back
asleep soon

dreaming of her
arms wrapped
around another

once again

---

5 pm in ohio and it suddenly all makes sense

another night hunting
for inspiration in
empty bottles

fading tail lights
down an old dirt
road

there's no lust left
in your kiss

no desire emerging
from your eyes
anymore

passion must have
got on that bus as
well

my rekindled faith
reminded me that
hope was lost long
ago

it shall rain for days
on end now that the
harvest has come to
pass

everything seems
slightly out of step
and no one is
beyond reproach
