what happens when
you lie to your children
— a poem by J.J. Campbell

what happens when
you lie to your children

i never had
any problems
saying goodbye

it was always
hello that made
me sweat and
feel more
awkward than
i already am

i was told when
i was younger
that i would
eventually
get over that

as i sit back
and reflect i
wonder if any
adult ever told
me the truth as
i was growing
up

perhaps i'm the
poster for what
happens when
you lie to your
children

hope can only
carry anyone
so far
