Feudal lords wage war over a kingdom
—a poem by Michael Edwards

Feudal lords wage war over a kingdom
no man was meant to inherit;
I went down to the water- there I met Icarus;
we talked about hubris, and how pride and greed
are inherent-
like the gods we came from, we’re all just
looking to be worshiped;
I guess Hermes attempts to deliver the message
were futile;
I left with a salty taste in my mouth-
two-parts disgust and one-part sea air;
I headed to the desert where
a man with a lizard tongue told me-
the people who love you force you
to destroy who you really are,
he called it:
a subtle kind of murder;
often times, we love the idea of what
could be, more-
we all want more;
I left feeling corroded,
 and less human,
and more-
something in-between.
